Better Sit Down Boy/Boyfriend – Confidence Man

January 13, 2018
fromthelisteningnook

Format: 7″ Black Vinyl

Side A: BETTER SIT DOWN BOY – scintillating old skool electronic drum pattern, oozing loops and samples, building a high-energy party vibe. A punchy, cheeky and fun cavalcade of happiness and joy. Like the Avalanches on speed. A true stomper of a track, featuring astonishing production values. Would fit just about any advert ever!

Side B: BOYFRIEND – bleeding-edge production serves up a banging digital party. Manic up-beat storytelling fused with a 60s aesthetic and layered synth genius. A hypnotic rhythm counterpoints the deadpan vocals. Electronics + humour + party = perfection!

Score: 10/10

Vinyl Thought: stomp the night away with digital party perfection

Shasta Fay/Amorous Battle – Sulky Boys

January 8, 2018
fromthelisteningnook

Format: 7″ Black Vinyl

Side A: Shasta Fay – top-shelf lo-fi shoegazing brilliance, with ultra-low key feel and a ever-so-perfect hint of Beck. A 90s indie vibe swamped by delicious vocal harmonies and a simple yet truly effective funky storytelling core.

Side B: Amorous Battle – deeply thoughtful lyricism merged with stripped back production and a 90s guitar aesthetic. There’s the tiniest hint of the ghost of early Manic Street Preachers hidden within. A wonderful track that would fit perfectly in colleges, commutes or US drama TV!

Score: 8/10

Vinyl Thought: stripped back to the knotty core, revealing lyrical greatness and lo-fi perfection

fromthelisteningnook

Format: 7″ Yellow/Orange Vinyl

Side A: BONNIE – The amazing Anteros are back with another slice of modern lively pop exuberance, over-flowing with Blondie-esque vocals and bouncy, upbeat fun! A super-sized helping of personality flows through this corker of a track backed by vibrant guitars and a hint of bubble-gum pop.

Side B: LOVE – a dreamy, bittersweet pop ballad infused with a gorgeous 80s feel and just the right amount of Jane Wiedlin vocal styling. A driving rhythm melds beautifully with a delicious main course of storytelling.

Score: 9/10

Vinyl Thought: 2018 won’t officially start until the debut Anteros album is released!

No Brainer – Jon Jones and the Beatnik Movement

October 27, 2017
fromthelisteningnook

Format: 7″ black vinyl
Side AA of a double A side from Come Play With Me

A slap-happy smash of discordant thumping screeching guitars resplendent with heady screamo chorus. Dark alleyway aggression meets metallic hobnailed vocals whilst repetitive slashes of noise bellow from the bottom of a tortured soul. A musical call for attention wrapped up is heavy duty fuzz and all sorts of shouty goodness.

Score: 8/10

Thought: down deep…deep in the markets better regions of existence bellows the agonized cry of Jon Jones’s musical soul!

Format: 7″ black vinyl
Side A of a double A side from Come Play With Me

Full fat punk rhythms enmeshed with Fuzzbox vocals and a messy melange of music and lyrics. Pacey and toe-tapping and chock full of melodic aggression and an ethereal punk-prog aesthetic. Slaps you on the bum with its super tight dancing guitar break.

Score: 8/10

Thought: a sexy three-way with Peter Gabriel, Fuzzbox and the Sex Pistols…in a garage…with DIY tools!

Dart/Disco/Drag – Blklstrs

October 8, 2017
fromthelisteningnook

Format: 7″ black vinyl

Side A: DART – a razor sharp distortion of slicing guitars and in your face 70s screamo punk vocals. A disharmonic head rush of tortured guitar is browbeaten by insistent tub thumping drums and underscored by hell-sent doom laden bass. This is pit of the soul punk…the theme tune to Dante’s Circles of Hell Tours.

Side B1: DISCO – a chiming solo guitar is reconciled by a low and dirty bassline and agitprop megaphone vocals. From the street prosletysing proclaiming an evil land of no hope and despair. A world view lacquered with primal scream therapy.

Side B2: DRAG – punk mendicant sensibilities travelling through a blasted post-apocalyptic world on a death-train powered by ginormous chords and desperate vocalizations. Siren-like repetitive concatenation of mournful pain.

Score: 8/10

Thought: punk from the depths of Hades brought to you in partnership with Strepsils!
